Evaluation of neuroprotective effects of Canna indica L against aluminium chloride induced memory impairment in rats

Memory disorders are the progressive neurological disorder, mainly causing dementia, memory loss and cognitive dysfunctions. The current study is aimed to experimentally validate crude extract of Canna indica aerial parts (CIA) root (CIR) against aluminium chloride induced altered in rats. Initially, methanolic CIA, hydroalcoholic CIR, their combination CIA + CIR were screened for Invitro antioxidant activity via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) nitric oxide (NO) assays, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory assay also enhancing by in-vivo models such as elevated plus maze (EPM), morris water (MWM), cooks pole climb (CPC), Actophotometer, novel object recognition (NOR), T-maze. Aluminium (AlCl3) (17 mg/kg/day p.o.) 21 days, was used an Alzheimer’s disease inducing agent Donepezil (AChE inhibitor) a standard treatment agent. AChE, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) malondialdehyde (MDA) level significantly increased, glutathione (GSH), total protein (TP), catalase (CAT), Dopamine decreased only AlCl3 treated rats with 200 mg/kg reversed these mechanisms.Histopathology cortex hippocampus examined at 40× magnification, indicating maintain integrity architecture CA1 CA3 neuronal cells compared control groups. vivo studies interospective exteroceptive behavior MWM, CPC, NOR, T-maze revealed that administration enhanced transfer latency (TL), escape time (ELT) decreases locomotion, discriminatory index, percentage alternation respectively.
